Let the Rain Come Down

“Katara!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, squeezing the waterbender’s wrist as I dragged her along the muddy path.  “I hate the rain!”

Her shoes squeaked to a stop.

“What?” Her big blue eyes tweaked wide, staring up into mine with her mouth agape.

A cold rush of droplets rippled along my spine and my entire body, rattling my frigid bones. I was surrounded by water, water, water everywhere… Drizzling down on us, trapping us in misty fog and grey skies. I remember the time I used to be afraid of water. The rain… I hated it.

“We have to get out of here!” I screeched, my arms wrapping around my body. I pleaded into those blue orbs for retreat to shelter. But her soft sweet face, often filled with mercy and compassion broke.

But now… I don’t know. Whenever the rain hits the ground, I just let it flow over me. I stand there under the earth’s fresh cold, chilling shower. When I was younger I used to scurry inside to hide away until the storm was over. Thank goodness it was such a rare thing for a tempest of water to clash with the hot weather of the Fire Nation.

When I was banished from my home that had to change. I couldn’t run every time the stupid clouds in the sky decided to drop a bombshell on me. There was only one path to getting home and that was to capture the Avatar. Nothing was going to stop me. So I had to put on a brave face.

She smirked, cold eyes warming with amusement. “The Prince of the Firebenders, afraid of a little rain?” A small giggle oozed from her thin lips. Usually that lovely sound would send a temperate tingle up my back and fervour would kiss my insides. But this time it cut me down, slicing my pride into little pieces.

“Shut it water tribe peasant!” I yelled through a horse voice, the chill was getting to me. “I hate the rain! I hate it! HATE IT!!!” I resembled a child throwing a fit of tantrums. But it was over fear, not pettiness. Katara was taken aback by the sharpness in my voice, having not realised the seriousness of my problem. She saw my one true weakness, how it inflicted this horrible emotional pain inside me.

Other than my Uncle and my parents, Katara was the only one who ever found out my little secret. I would never tell anyone in our little… gang, about this. I was already making myself vulnerable by trying to fit into a group of people that despised me!

“Zuko!” She called. “Zuko! It’s all right, calm down.” She held my shivering form, her tenderness soothing me.

Katara has always amazed me… One moment she could be harsh, seemingly invincible under righteous fury or acridity… The next, she was warm and loving… That was a side she rarely shown me. But we had only just gotten to know each other. And that locked up part of her personality opened up to me.

I heavily breathed in and out into her shoulder, resting in her arms. “I’m sorry…” Katara muttered into my ear, feeling her hand gently caress my back comfortingly. My once pale face lit with fire, knowing how close I was to her…And the presence of the rain suddenly disappeared from me… “I shouldn’t have made fun of something like that.”

“You didn’t know…” I mumbled under my breath, my mind being clouded by the wonderful wet scent of her hair…

I don’t know whatever ever possessed me to do what I did that day… I must have been out of my mind. The stupid rain had driven me to the edge of insanity… Well that’s my excuse.

We just stood there, in each other’s arms. I didn’t want to leave. And those lips look inviting…

I half expected Katara to freeze me against the wall. I never used to be so bold…

I pressed mine against them, devouring the sweet taste. My water maiden cried out in surprise, trying to pull away from me. I quickly grabbed her, holding her close, feeling her warmth against mine.

Her motives of escape slowly vanished, and she melted into my embrace.

“Oh…” I heard Katara moan into my mouth, as I squeezed my arms even tighter around her form.</I>

… Must be the waterbender’s fault…

Yes. It must be…

She started returning my acts of affection, barely putting up a fight anymore. Combing my hair with her soft fingers so lovingly, happily trailing her tongue along my bottom lip…

Instead of feeling cold and numb when the rain comes down, I felt an unfamiliar tingle deep within me…My fear died.

But as I’ve said, facing fears can lead to great things…

Thank you, my little waterbender…
